Visiting the sanctuary of Barbana in the Grado Lagoon

During a stay in Grado, a boat trip to the Island of Barbana is not to be missed! On the Island there is still the ancient Marian sanctuary, which still resides today by a  community of Benedictine monks, it's as well a pilgrimage destination for the faithful and the starting point of the Celestial Way, the Cammino Celeste.
Departing from Grado, a connection by sea is active throughout the year departing from the island of Schiuasa, in addition there are several operators who organize excursions and taxi service to the island of Barbana.
Every year, on the first Sunday of July, the traditional "Perdon di Barbana" procession is celebrated, which moves across the lagoon from Grado to Barbana and dates back to 1237 when Grado was saved from a terrible plague.
