The spectacular Fontanone di Goriuda waterfall springs directly from the inside of the earth, at that place in the Val Raccolana where the snow and rain of the Canin mountain range escapes into the open after a kilometre-long underground journey through the winding and swallowing chasms of karst rock.
A flow of icy water from the upper grotto leaps over the valley, then plunges into the crystal-clear pool of water at the base of the cascade, in the steamy atmosphere of a lush beech forest. In the area surrounding the pond, a pleasant path reveals the secrets of Goriuda from an exclusive viewpoint, one that allows a view of the valley, Mount Montasio and Mount Cimone from the womb of the waterfall itself, passing near the spray along a sheltered and mysterious rocky cavern.
Itinerary details:
After climbing, from Chiusaforte, the Raccolana valley in the direction of Sella Nevea, just beyond the village of Piani, it is possible to park near the trattoria "Al Fontanon" from where the waterfall is already visible. Following the provincial road for about twenty metres, at the monument to the cyclist, signs lead visitors along an accessible path that enters the woods to the base of the Fontanon, which can be reached, along hiking terrain suitable for all, in about 5 minutes.
The underground part of the Fontanone, where the waters flow inside the mountain, can be visited with the guides of the Julian Pre-Alps Park, using a dinghy to pass the first flooded chamber and then along an effortless equipped route.
