A few kilometres from the open-air Museum of Mt. Ermada, you can visit the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Aurisina. Although it lies just a few dozen metres from the highway, you need to follow a signalled trail (CAI trail No. 32) to reach it, departing from Aurisina. After crossing the motorway underpass, a meadow opens up and, at the end of it, slightly on the left, it leads to a sinkhole where the cemetery is located.
Surrounded by stone walls, the cemetery hosts the remains of 1934 Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell in the area between Monfalcone and Mt. Ermada during the Great War. Rough stone crosses bearing the soldiers' names are arranged in an orderly manner on the lawn. They include also an Italian soldier, private Giovanni Driol of the 56th Infantry Regiment.
The Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Aurisina is very well preserved thanks to the work carried out first by the Young Firemen Association of Upper Austria (in 1974-75) and then by the Association Black Cross of Austria (in 1993, 1996, 2010 and 2012), two organisations traditionally involved in restoration and maintenance of memorials and cemeteries where their fellow nationals rest.
