Watch me go...on a SUP!

Let's face it, what could be better than a board in the middle of the sea on a hot summer day? When the sun is shining and the heat is scorching there's no way you want to spend long hours at the office; your friends' pictures on social media make you fantasize about exotic destinations and distant places, where you can walk, sleep, and try sporting activities on the beach...hang on, but I can do all that in Grado, too!

For those looking for a water sport that combines the pleasure of discovery with a bit of healthy exercise... let's learn more about the SUP!
Stand-Up Paddling (SUP) is definitely one of the most popular “beach” activities of recent years, both for its completeness in terms of physical and balance training, and because it can be practised on any aquatic area. The good news is that you do not need to be a great athlete or a fitness fanatic to try it; obviously, being able to swim helps, but if you're keen and willing to try new things, that's all you need for a fun experience!

When I try a SUP for the first time I'm with Giovanni, an instructor at "Kite life - Grado", who starts by showing me its basic elements (the paddle and the board), tells me the differences between the different types of boards, and explains how to grip the paddle correctly. A little introduction, and we're in the water!
After getting the board in place, I follow Giovanni out where the water is deeper by paddling on my knees, familiarising myself with the board and the paddle. After reaching the "raft", it's finally time to stand up! After getting my hands and feet in position, I use my legs to stand up and....the calm waters and lack of wind help me, so I'm up right away without much effort; however, keeping my balance is another matter altogether! I learn to turn slowly, I learn to turn faster and... splash! I was due for a refreshing dip...

No worries though, I get back on the board and start all over again, with my legs shaking a little less and determined to try again!
