Josef Ressel Trail

The historical - hightech nature trail

The  trail named after Josef Ressel, was designed and built by foresters with the aim of giving autonomy to people, especially the visually impaired. It was designed to "know and think, but above all to touch and listen".

At the Nature Centre, the staff of the Forest Service will provide further insights on the karst environment and other nature themes, supported by interactive exhibitions.

The trail
The route leads along 4 km on easy plain footpaths of the Igouza and Lipizza woods and, crossing the border between Italy and Slovenia, connects Basovizza to the Equile di Lipizza.
Currently it is possible to cover only the Italian section of 1.9 km that crosses the Bosco Igouza. Along the trail there are three rest areas equipped with benches, trilingual information tables, materials for tactile use and voice messages by using the transmitter/receiver system. The stops and crossings with the forest roads are highlighted on the trailmap.
At 0,5 km you will find the Forest-stop, at 0,9 km the Geology-stop and at 1,3 km the Fauna-stop. After 150 m, the Josef Ressel trail leaves the forest track and turns right onto the CAI trail no.3.
Following a track of 340 m, the receiver is out of signal and the terrain presents some roughnesses. On the right there is a handrail and then a bridge that passes a limestone outcrop.
The CAI trail n.3 connects to the unused road Basovizza - Sesana, and, receiving the signal again, the audioguide leads you to the border (50 m), here you find an information board about the history of the road and the state border.
Josef Ressel, a forester and inventor, was born in Chrudim, Bohemia in 1793. Whilst working in forest management, he carried out thorough studies on the condition of the woods, the production of wood for the Navy and designed reforestation plans that anticipated the huge project of reforesting the Karst. He was the inventor of ingenious experiments in the naval field, including propulsion by a screw of Archimedes and steam shipping with a screw propeller.

He lived in Trieste since 1821 and tied his life to these multi-ethnic lands enclosing in his existence the very essence of this path: a deep respect for nature and man, without barriers or borders, always projected towards a technological and social future of humanity as a whole. He died in Ljubljana in 1857.
