Avostanis Lake

A lovely, crisp January day for exploring a place that is a symbol of Carnia, with Canadian friends who are surprised by all the beauty of our region in this season. A journey of stories and smiles. It starts under 16th-century decayed dolostone arches, in the valley of San Pietro on the ancient Via Julia Augusta, then continues through Pramosio Forest: sleepy firs and beech-trees watch us, they’re used to visitors in all seasons because it’s always a breath of fresh air for the soul and the eyes up here. We’re halfway through our journey. Lots of things to see and… here we are! Freit bec, but we’ve reached the Avostanis glacial lake. Frozen. What a sight! Some people are playing curling, some are skating, others are looking amazed at the patterns of air bubbles that froze as they rose to the surface. Then there’s the climbing area to discover: there are lots of climbing routes to enjoy in Carnia. A hot tea, a chocolate bar, a photo and we’re off! The sun’s last rays bid us farewell as we leave the mountains and sing in chorus ‘O ce biel Cjstiel a Udin’!

Where to stay

Daniela Di Ronco

A Carnic sbilfa, I love exploring the woods and mountains! A mother with a messy kitchen and the continuous coming-and- going of a B&B home, Carnia greeter, natural mandala and a ‘bon tai, cun pan e salam’. Here I am! I’m almost there. With Cristina, who lives next to my home and B&B, I share joys and plans for our Carnia.
