Sutrio
The village, centre of wood-related craftsmanship
This year, the small village of Sutrio in Friuli Venezia Giulia will donate the sacred representation of the mystery of the Nativity with its installation in the Vatican Square in Rome.
Nestled in the foothills of Mount Zoncolan, this characteristic mountain village lives surrounded by lush forests and alpine atmospheres in which wood craftsmanship was developed in ancient times and has been handed down to us on the tip of the craftsmen's gouges and chisels.
A small town that revolves around the characteristic historical centre, consisting of small, cobbled streets and typical stone houses where some of the most popular carving and sculpture workshops in the region can be found. The scent of wood drifts through the workshops and houses, along the village streets to the piles of logs, the daughters of the surrounding mountains. The sculptors narrate the magic of these lands with wood, both plentiful and precious, and with craftsmanship rooted in the memory of past generations.
Thanks to these unique qualities, Sutrio hosts the "Magic of Wood" exhibition over the first weekend in September, a showcase of wood-related craftsmanship where visitors can admire and purchase items manufactured locally, engraved furniture featuring ancient decorations, household items, carved statues, and low reliefs.
Outdoors in summer and winter
During the summer season, the road from the village to Mount Zoncolan (1,750 metres) is perfect for easy hikes and extremely scenic walks. Several trekking itineraries lead to the nearby peaks, for example to Mount Tamai at 2,000 metres, or into the magical and ancient world of the alpine pastures, where the Agareit, Meleit, Tamai and Marmoreana huts are excellent destinations for a day in the great outdoors.
In winter, the area of Mount Zoncolan is home to the widespread ski district boasting spectacular views of the Carnic Alps and Mount Coglians, the highest peak in Friuli Venezia Giulia. With 22 kilometres of slopes, appreciated by both skiers and snowboarders, the area is one of the most extensive and modern ski areas in the region.
