The Friuli Venezia Giulia region's Farm Teaching Centres are farms and farm holiday accommodation structures which are organised and equipped to handle not just visitors with an interest in rural life but also school groups.

Farm Teaching Centres are the key that provides a practical, 'hands-on' introduction to rural life, and rural culture, traditions and activities, as well as the lives of animals, and where farm produce actually comes from. These Farm Teaching Centres favour a directly experience-based, interactive and fun approach to the services they provide to students and other visitors.
These farms are often called open-air teaching workshops, where the teacher is the farmer who runs the farm hosting the workshop, transmitting to others the 'savvy' and 'know-how' that goes into the job, what it all means, and also a sense of the sheer effort needed to run a farm!

The themes focus on discovering the natural heritage of the neighbourhood and reviving the ties between farm produce, origins and production techniques, as part of an effort to generate awareness with regard to suitable, healthful diet, responsible consumption and sustainable environmental development.

Teamwork with ERSA - a rural development agency - has resulted in an impressive training programme for farming operatives and teaching staff. The region currently boasts 58 accredited Farm Teaching Centres.

Activities at Farm Teaching Centres

There are very many novel and enjoyable farm activities on offer, ranging from jam making to sheep shearing, not to mention sausage making and sowing vegetables. The workshops include stable work, grape harvesting, 'tree spotting' and recognising birdsongs and the sounds of the farmyard.
