Caves
Put yourself in the shoes of a spelunker and discover the bizarre shapes of the stalactites in the record-breaking caves of Friuli Venezia Giulia!
There are four main caves in Friuli Venezia Giulia and many of them actually hold records. The village of Villanova di Lusevera, for example, can boast no fewer than 14 kilometres of caves and cavities of carsic origin. One of these cavities in particular, called Grotta nuova, is the longest not only in Italy but also in Europe, extending for 7 kilometres.
The Grotta Gigante of Sgonico, near Trieste, is considered the world's largest cavern accessible to tourists. Featured in the Guinness Book of World Records since 1995, the Grotta Gigante is extremely interesting and fascinating thanks to its wealth of stalactites and stalagmites.
Another cave that is exceptional from both a naturalistic and historical viewpoint is the Grotta di San Giovanni d'Antro, located in Antro, near Pulfero. This large cave, which may have been already been inhabited in prehistoric times, was used as both a place of worship and defence as far back as antiquity.
The Grotta di Pradis, also known as "Green Cave" for the colour of its walls, leads visitors to the ravine of the Cosa stream, amidst archaeological and paleontologic relics.
