Venzone

Mediaeval charm

This old town was destroyed by the 1976 earthquake and, thanks to the industriousness of the people of Friuli, has now been rebuilt exactly as it was at the height of its splendour in the Middle Ages.

The result is one of the finest examples of artistic reconstruction anywhere and has been declared a national monument.

The reconstruction included the imposing Mediaeval town walls and the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, where there is the mysterious Chapel of San Michele, with its famous mummies.
These date back to 1647, when the 'hunchback' mummy came to light, the first of forty or so mummies discovered in the cathedral tombs.

The town hall is a splendid example of a Gothic-Venetian palace.

In the second half of October every year the town bursts into life with the famous Pumpkin Festival, like a fairy tale form the Middle Ages. The town centre swarms with musicians, jugglers, knights, noblewomen and other Mediaeval characters. And at the heart of it all there is the pumpkin, in all its shapes, sizes and recipes.
