Sauris is the highest municipality in the region, extending between 1200 metres (Sauris di Sotto) and 1400 metres (Sauris di Sopra) above sea level: it lies in a secluded valley, surrounded by high and wild mountains, enriched by a beautiful lake, by its wooden architectures and by its multi-building hotel.
Gourmets will appreciate the original smoked ham from Sauris and the unfiltered beer produced here.
Don't miss the Ham Festival, which takes place in Sauris every year in July.
Sauris still maintains unchanged its original building characteristics, with its wooden stavoli (typical mountain buildings) and its houses having typical balconies: today, many of these characteristic buildings make up the multi-building hotel, where you will breathe in the atmosphere of a village with ancient traditions and rites. Moreover, one of the town's typical buildings houses the Ethnographic Museum.
The origin of Sauris is linked to the worship of King Oswald the Saint of Northumbria, to whom a sanctuary is dedicated, which preserves a relic (the thumb) of the Saint himself. The sanctuary contains one of Carnia's most important works: the wooden altar (Flügelaltar) by Michael Parth from Bruneck (1524).
The large lake, created by the dam of the Lumiei stream, which characterises Sauris' landscape and in which the surrounding mountains are reflected, is really wonderful.
Sauris is a well-known tourist destination: it provides many beautiful hikes in the mountains and, thanks to its facilities, it is an excellent winter holiday resort.
On the night of the last Saturday of Carnival, you may happen to meet the Kheirar, the King of Carnival and, by following the light of the torches that enter the wood, you will be amazed by the charm of this initiative.
