It is the largest municipality in Carnia and it has probably been inhabited since the pre-Roman age.
The castle ruins can still be seen in the locality called Chiastelàt (at 960 metres of height).
Forni di Sotto lies in the area of the Friulian Dolomites Park and it is a good starting point for many hikes to reach the high-altitude shepherd's huts and discover the local flora and fauna.
The nineteenth-century fountains of the three boroughs, into which the town was divided and around which Forni di Sotto was rebuilt after the fire occurred in 1944 during the fights for national liberation, have remained intact and are some of the most beautiful in Carnia.
