Friuli Venezia Giulia, a land of great wines
A heterogeneous and charming landscape where there is a natural vocation for vine-growing and excellent wines are produced: here you can enjoy a unique sensory experience, discovering some of the best white wines of the world and very peculiar red wines, tasting them in the many typical wine cellars scattered over the region.
Eight DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) areas and two DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin) areas for 1500 wine farms that produce 80 million bottles a year, with renowned wine varieties, such as Friulano (former Tocai) and two jewels such as Ramandolo and Picolit.
Friuli-Aquileia, Carso, Collio, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Friuli Grave, Friuli Latisana, Friuli-Isonzo, Friuli Annia are the DOC areas where a wide range of wines - both native and not - are produced, continuing a tradition that stretches back to the Roman age.
Besides the precious and already mentioned Picolit and Ramandolo (famous "meditation wines"), don't forget to taste the full bodied red wines (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Terrano, Pinot nero, Schioppettino, ecc.) and the perfumed white wines (Friulano, Verduzzo friulano, Malvasia istriana, Chardonnay, Pinot bianco, Pinot grigio, Ribolla, Riesling, Sauvignon, Traminer aromatico, etc.), which are perfectly matched with the tasty dishes of local and international cuisine.
