The tastes of Cividale del Friuli
Cividale del Friuli, where local gastronomic traditions have been kept up in the thousand different choice dishes of national cuisine, is the place to go for good food.
In the many restaurants in this area you can taste the famous soups with homemade pasta and beans, simple but delicious wild herb omelettes, tasty salami flavoured with garlic and frico (melted cheese with potatoes).
There are a few traditional dishes that deserve special mention, such as muset con brovade and, for dessert, the famous gubana.
Cividale del Friuli, however, is also a land of excellent vintage wines, which have turned this town into an important stage in the wine tours of the Colli Orientali.
The "Colli Orientali del Friuli" are a rich winegrowing area covering about 2,000 hectares of vineyards.
Besides the autochthonous wines like Tocai friulano, Verduzzo friulano, Ribolla gialla, Schioppettino, Pignolo, Tazzelenghe, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso and Picolit, the Colli Orientali area is also perfectly suitable for grape types from other European regions such as Chardonnay, white Pinot, grey Pinot and black Pinot, as well as Sauvignon, Cabernet franc, Merlot, aromatic Traminer, Rhine Riesling and Istrian Malvasia.
The adaptability of the lands of Friuli has therefore allowed for a remarkable production, both in terms of quantity and in terms of quality.
The farms in this area, thanks to the practice of handpicking the grapes and the use of modern and sophisticated vinification technologies, are a guarantee of excellent DOC "Colli Orientali del Friuli" wines.
